Slug normalization rules
The tool lowercases text, removes combining accent marks where Unicode normalization permits, turns runs of punctuation or whitespace into one hyphen, and trims hyphens from both ends. Letters and numbers from supported Unicode scripts are retained.
Slugs, collisions, and existing URLs
- Two different titles can normalize to the same slug, so a CMS or application still needs a uniqueness rule.
- Changing a slug for an already-published page changes its URL. Preserve the old URL with a redirect when the platform supports it.
- Slug generation is not the same as URL encoding: this tool creates a readable path segment, while URL encoding percent-encodes characters that need a safe representation in a URL.
- Do not treat a generated slug as proof that the target URL is available; check the destination system for an existing collision.
